Understorm

The lowest cloud layer in Azimuth is called the understorm. Despite being a key aspect of Azimuth's geography (arguably one of the only aspects of it's natural geography), the understorm is not particularly well understood. What is well known however, is that it's home to the most violent turbulence and severe weather in the world. Probes have revealed wind speeds in some parts in excess of 400 kph, and a focused wind shear at MSL of 100 kph or more.

To most inhabitants of Azimuth, the understorm forms the bottom of the world; the lowest point beyond which is nothing but oblivion. As such, the understorm features heavily in spiritual beliefs and often plays host to the darkest demons of myth.

Scientific penetration of the understorm has met with limited success. Gold Age Azrunite surveys hypothesised a layer of fast moving heavy gases, agitated by core streams or possibly geothermal activity. As Azrune's influence shrank and its facilities were canabalised (see: The Collapse), knowledge on the understorm was all but lost. In the modern era, the mechanism by which the understorm is driven remains largely a mystery.
