Kiy Tanthar (Azbuka: Кы Танцар) is a Cloudgazer from Brazak West, and a protagonist of the Cloudgazer story. He is cool-headed and often detached, although marked by an almost chivalrous sense of doing the right thing. He has a younger sister, Julene Tanthar, though her kidnapping fuels a deep anger and resentment for Ganzabar; as well as a longing desire to discover her fate.

Background

Kiy was born in Laronor, Great Brazak, before the occupation years to Eugene Branna and Tatyana Tanthar. Both were officers aboard the GBC Nushimny, a Tykos Class cruiser. His parents were unmarried, although they did have a daughter, Julene Tanthar, shortly after the outbreak of the Liberation War.

Kiy's mother Tatyana was later promoted to command of her own ship, the loaned USK carrier RAS Dawnstar. During one of the final engagements of the conflict, the Dawnstar and several other rebel ships were ambushed at Nantez. The Dawnstar was sunk, killing both Captain Tanthar and her lover Officer Branna. On instructions from his parents, Kiy had made for an escape with his younger sister Julene on board a trusted escape plane. The Tanthars were betrayed, however, and the plane landed on a Ganzabi ship. Julene was taken away while Kiy was incarcerated aboard the GMFS Isoria and shipped back to Ganzabar. He never saw his younger sister again.

He spent four months in a relocation camp at Jonzunstad, where he met a Valyan named Jans Labeck, known simply as The Amputee. Although cold and unresponsive at first, Labeck came to liking the young Brazakker and taught him to adapt to the prison life. However, due to a grave error on Kiy's part (regarding a girl), Labeck was forced to reveal his 'amputation' to be a hidden Sling. During the incident, he was shot in the leg, shattering the bone so he could no longer walk. He urged Kiy to take the Sling and keep it safe above all else. Puzzled, yet keeping his word, Kiy fled with Maeshel, the Aquitano girl Kiy had sought to save. During the last moment of their escape, Maeshel was shot in the back, falling from Kiy's grip into the sky. Although he was able to subsequently get away, the experience forever changed him.

Personality

Kiy is hard to fluster and an easy-going personality. He can be solitary, but has a charismatic and cheeky side to him when he's in his comfort zone. He has a fear of aerofoil craft after an accident from his childhood, and a deep-seated resentment toward Ganzabar taking his parents and sister from him.
